Hernia

This practical session is designed to equip participants with the skills required to:

  • Safely open the abdominal cavity
  • Perform three key abdominal closure techniques:
    • Continuous layered closure
    • Interrupted layered closure
    • Mass closure with retention sutures (for managing burst abdomen)
Equipment & Materials

Participants will train using simulation models and standard surgical instruments, including:

  • Abdominal wall models
  • Scalpel handles and blades
  • Needle holders and scissors
  • Hemostats / artery forceps and Kocher clamps
  • Tissue forceps and retractors
  • Sutures and balloons (for simulation)
  • Antiseptics (iodine or chlorhexidine)
  • Surgical drapes
  • Sharps disposal containers
Practical Training Approach

This session is highly interactive and designed to replicate a real operating room environment.

  • Participants work in pairs, taking on the roles of surgeon and assistant
  • The assistant prepares and organizes instruments at the start of each “procedure”
  • Both participants conduct a pre-procedure check to ensure readiness
  • The simulated abdomen is cleaned and draped following proper sterile technique

The role of the assistant is taught alongside the surgical techniques, reinforcing teamwork and coordination in operative care.

Outcome

By the end of this session, participants will have developed the technical precision, confidence, and safety awareness required to perform abdominal opening and closure techniques effectively in clinical practice.
